To What?

Essentially, 5 Songs To is a collection of short playlists which consist of songs/tracks that share a quality that makes them perfect for listening to in a certain situation; whether that be while scuba diving, making a cocktail, breaking up, or watching an electrical storm. When it comes down to it, this is a blog through which I can hopefully introduce you to music that you might not know about or otherwise listen to. It is also a blog where I can take suggestions and recommendations from you - so feel free to comment! Despite the ease with which music can be downloaded illegally today, if there are songs you find you enjoy, please purchase them from their respective artists. Cheers to my brother, Brad, for the background artwork.

Disclaimer:
There will be minimal rap, hip-hop or modern pop music covered in this blog, due to conflict with personal taste

...Fall Asleep To

1) Night Swimmer – Beth Jeans Houghton
2) On My Way Home – Enya
3) Autumn’s Child – Devendra Banhart
4) Rivers of Gold – Bry Webb
5) Sleeping Giant – Jonsi and Alex

These songs are guaranteed to send you to the Land of Nod; the harmonies and music box style of Night Swimmer, the mellow synth of On My Way Home, the trembling of Autumn’s Child, the minimalism of Rivers of Gold, and finally the ambience of Sleeping Giant.

"The Woods are lovely, dark and deep. But I have promises to keep, and miles to go before I sleep" - Robert Frost

...Escape from the Police To

1) Paranoid – Black Sabbath
2) Coming into Los Angeles – Arlo Guthrie
3) The Width of a Circle – David Bowie
4) Immigrant Song – Led Zeppelin
5) Run Like Hell – Pink Floyd

I’ve never had to run from the police, but if I were planning on doing so I would definitely want to have this playlist on my iPod ready to listen to. Plenty of classic rock in here – remember these songs need to be played LOUDLY, especially the Pink Floyd. There’s a live version of Run Like Hell from 1980 which is definitely worth checking out.

...Swim Underwater To

1) La Petite Fille de la Mer – Vangelis
2) Sleeping Lessons – The Shins
3) Us and Them – Pink Floyd
4) Truman Sets Sail – Burkhard Dallwitz
5) Daniell In The Sea – Jonsi and Alex

The difficulties of swimming underwater while listening to music do not escape me. However, both possessing a scuba license and recently having come back from a week long spearfishing trip in Cooktown, have prompted me to muse over what music would be ideal for exploring the colourful and populated reefs along the Australian coast. If I could listen to music underwater. Cousteau would have been proud.
